Job-Hunting Myths (Part 2)

Here are a few more job hunting myths that you should avoid when looking for work.

You can’t negotiate entry-level salary. This might be true for some jobs but bargaining over your job offer shows your potential employer that you are discrimminating about where you want to work. But don’t over-bargain; coming from a prestigious college doesn’t mean you get more pay. Employers will care more about what you can do for the company than where you came from.

I will get an offer if I put my resume all over the internet. The sheer number of resumes from job boards and site makes it impossible to get any employer’s attention. It’s better to be more pro-active about the job search and tailor-fit your resume to each job you apply for.

If I don’t know what I want to do, I’ll go to grad school. Using grad school to buy you time can be a waste of time, money, and energy. Getting a post-graduate degree should be a means to a well-thought of end.
