Decreased Demand for Retail Jobs
As Internet shopping and home shopping continues to grow, there will be a decline in retail store positions. While there will always be retail stores and malls, there will be fewer positions to fill.
A positive trend in retail today was started by Walmart when they chose to employ retired and older people to manage the store floor.
The demand for cashiers will also decline as stores become more automated and install self-service scanners at the checkout. Big retailers like Home Depot and a few grocery stores started installing self-checkout systems in 2002. Although there will still be cashier positions, there will be far less of them. Same goes for stocking clerks and other retail store positions.
